What is LPFM?
Low Power FM Radio, also known (by some) as microradio.

The FCC defines LPFM as "a broadcast service that permits the licensing of 50-100 watt FM radio stations within a service radius of up to 3.5 miles and 1-10 watt FM radio stations within a service radius of 1 to 2 miles." Its low wattage and small service distance mean that it is fit for ‘microcasting’ or ‘narrowcasting’ rather than broadcasting and mostly takes the form of local, small-scale radio stations. Intended to serve its proximate community with its direct, immediate issues, concerns, and needs, the LPFM is an antidote to the monopolized, homogenized, and highly regulated voices of the consolidated media. Some choose to operate radio stations without attaining a license in defiance of the legal parameters as well as the powerful media. The FCC considers them "pirates," but many pirate radio operators see themselves as engaged in acts of civil disobedience.
