What is Radio?

We all know what a radio is. We wake up to its sound in the morning, listen to it while driving, working, jogging, etc., and hear it almost anywhere we go—stores, malls, or even on the phone when placed on hold. In a more technical sense, radio—or radio waves, to be more precise—refers to a section of the electromagnetic spectrum, which encompasses electric waves, X-rays, infra-red and ultra-violet (UV), and light.

At the end of the 19th century, Italian scientist and inventor Guglielmo Marconi successfully sent wireless signals over a distance and continued to develop practical applications of his groundbreaking invention. Wireless, the older and more descriptive name for radio, evolved through the 20th century and became the technical basis for numerous devices. Indeed, we are by now completely surrounded by tools and appliances that use radio frequencies—TV, satellite, air traffic control, cellular phone, GPS (Global Positioning System), and many more. They not only make our lives easier and richer but also, one may say, define them.
